Speech #2 Outline
- Each year about 1,825 college students between the age of 18-24 die from alcohol-related injuries
- Alcohol abuse is a large problem on our campus and in colleges across the U.S. and binge drinking is a large factor
- There are steps we can take to reduce injuries and alcohol abuse
- Binge Drinking is a killer among college students
- According to a national survey, 60% of college students age 18-22 have drank alcohol in the past month, and 2/3 of those students also participated in binge drinking
- The culture around binge drinking at Iowa is present and many do not think it will harm them
- There are steps that can be taken to reduce binge drinking, and possibly to eventually stop it all together
- In Iowa City, bars can implement a system to reduce binge drinking and heighten overall safety of college students
- Binge drinking occurs once a person's BAC is above a 0.08, which is about 5 drinks for most people
- Bars can limit each person to five drinks by having a wristband for each person a punching a hole in the wristband each time a drink is purchased
- This will not only reduce binge drinking and alcohol-related injuries, but it will also reduce drunk driving, making this campus a safer place overall
- Their would little to no cost up front for bars to implement this system, they would just need to train staff on how to handle the system and possibly purchase a hole puncher
- Many bars already hand out wristbands to bar patrons, so this will not be an issue
- The establishments may see a decline in overall revenue, but the safety of the people in the bars should be more important than money
- Also, the bars could make money back in other areas, whether having a cover charge or increasing certain prices of drinks and food
- By implementing this system, safety will increase and binge drinking will decrease
- In conclusion, binge drinking and alcohol abuse are both huge problems at the University of Iowa, but there are ways to reduce this abuse and other alcohol-related injuries
- The proposed system would reduce binge drinking and would increase safety for students
- Also, the system would be low-cost overall and would be worth it for everyone involved in the long run

Topic Proposal
Gym class is a very important part of school for many children, but it is not required in all states for students to participate in physical education. There has been a debate regarding this topic for many years, and many argue on both sides, however this type of education is very important for young people to fight obesity, improve their performance in the classroom, and develop skills that will last a lifetime. I believe that physical education should be required in all states, especially knowing that obesity is an epidemic in our country. Everyone should be made aware of the benefits that come along with this education, and by implementing these laws, people will understand how important these classes truly are. I have taken physical education throughout my years of school, and I have seen firsthand the affect it has on people, and I still use skills that I learned in physical education even today. I know that physical education is important, and if all states implemented physical education into their daily lives it would have a great affect on our country.
